Asian Modern—with a Twist
About the Project
A new 2-story construction with walls of glass left little privacy, security, or magic for this house in Venice Beach, California.
First we brought in a magnificent, large jacaranda tree for shade and interest from the second floor. Next we installed a friendly perimeter wall with new gate, using alternating ribbons of translucent plexiglas and a rich mahogany-like wood. A new planter and planted parkway served as a fragrant offering to the street.
The front courtyard was transformed into an outdoor dining and lounging area—an extension of the kitchen/living space, complete with a bubbling koi pond and water lily garden. Pots of similar style but different sizes punctuated the steps. The pots were planted with orchid-like epidendron and mauve succulents.
On the rooftop, we installed a virtual “Venice Beach” for the kids—a large, deep sandbox, with an adjacent sunflower head shower to cool down.
A full kitchen with BBQ serves up dinner in front of a fireplace for cool evenings. Rich wood decking completes the feeling down to your toes.
